This is one of those netbooks which has something for everyone!
I am always looking for a bargain and the one place I often visit for a bargain is Amazon because I am sure to find something which suits my pocket as well as passes my technical scrutiny.
Let me begin with the review…
The Acer mini netbook computer has a nice, plush good looking glossy LED monitor. The glare is minimized because of the LED as opposed to earlier generation LCD monitors. LED also reduces energy consumption and therefore increases battery life. It has 6 cell battery pack with 8 hours life with 4400 mAh.
In some reviews of Acer 10.1 inch laptop , I have noticed that buyers are finding it difficult to upgrade their RAM. However the installed RAM is efficient enough to work with. If you don’t necessarily see any point in upgrading your RAM you don’t have to worry about this.
As long as you get good streaming video and wireless connectivity, your requirements are fulfilled. If you want to do some professional graphics design or 3D modeling, netbooks are way out of the league. Upgrading the RAM will not help because other parts will still not be up to it. You might as well look at a workstation or something similar.
The hard disk capacity of 160 GB is awesome when you think about the end purpose of this machine. To give you an idea, I have over 100 HD movies in my 160 GB hard disk and still going strong. In comparison if I were to be working on a 3D renderer even 1600 GB would have been insufficient.
Many of you must be wondering why in some netbooks the same six cell battery pack runs for eleven hours?
The secret lies in the mAh or milli ampere hours. Same six cell battery back with a higher capacity of 5800 mAh will run longer than 4400 mAh. My apologies for diving into technical waters but I want to put these doubts to rest once and for all. It will help you ask the right questions when you next buy a netbook or any laptop for that matter. In case of Acer AO532h-2588, the battery casing at the back of the netbook has been redesigned to fit snugly without showing an ugly bulge at the back. I wish the air vents were more conveniently placed. Wonder what the hot air will do if you happened to wear a miniskirt and work on this netbook? I like the HP design better.
This blue netbook acer has 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N450 processor with 512 KB L2 cache, 667 MHz FSB. Nothing special here. Windows 7 Starter comes preinstalled like in any other netbook. Did you know that Microsoft is selling their Windows 7 Starter OS at heavy discount and therefore all netbook manufacturers are offering this operating system. Let me tell you something which you may already know – Microsoft has enough clout to move mountains. I am peeved by this because my freedom has been curtailed and we must live with the stuff which is forced down our throat. The problem is that automatic recovery means I have to swallow the same operating system all over again if anything were to happen to it.
The good news is that you can load the acer 10.1 net book whichever operating system you want and get rid of the preinstalled one.
I love Acer because of another reason. It has fantastic webcam, audio mike and stereo speakers built into the bezel. It is great for a video chat. I have used it with Google video chat, Windows live Messenger and Skype – the video purrs like a well fed cat. I didn’t need to connect an external mike and stuff, everything was right there on the netbook.
Before I forget, let me discus the most important part of any netbook – connectivity. The Acer mini laptop 10.1 has Wireless-N Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) for connecting to any wireless ultra-high speed network. It has fast Ethernet (10/100) for connecting to a LAN. It comes with Multi-in-1 memory card reader which means you can work with every conceivable memory card.
It also has three USB ports, which is standard with all Acer Netbooks. If you are wondering what you would do with three USB ports, rest assured that sometime you would need them as I often do.
Overall I like Acer ao532h netbook on two counts. The price is attractive and it is feature rich. The battery life of eight hours means that I can use it all day long without lugging along the power cord (which can be a painful affair). Incidentally the power cord has also been redesigned to make it smaller and thinner.
For intensive users the battery may not last as long as eight hours. The power settings also affect how long battery remains charged. It is compact, sleek and ergonomic and comes in pleasant colors, predominantly black.
Did you know what Ford said in his autobiography – “Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black”.
I like the sentiment.
