After jumping on the netbook bandwagon I finally decided to purchase an Asus EEE PC 105PE (eeepc hackintosh) after my research on searching the best netbooks available out today. I was in seek of something smaller than my laptop. My laptop is great to use, don’t get me wrong but I was looking for something I could carry around with me room to room, place to place with great battery life. My laptop was a bit bulky and heavy and battery life wasn’t good. I always had to be by a wall outlet. My AsusEEE105 netbook is used mainly for business use for typing, word processing, checking email, going online, simple task but important ones. After reading tons of great feedback from people who’ve purchased this netbook I thought I’d give this one a shot and haven’t looked back on making any bad decision.

This review is on the ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE also known as the 1005 pe netbook
I’ll go over the main point and features of what stands out with this netbook:
- Contains a 1.66 Ghz Intel N450 Atom Processor (512kb L2 Cache)
The Atom Processor runs off of less power thereby producing less heat. As with my laptop, the bottom of it got extremely hot when using it for long periods of time. It was uncofortable. With this netbook because of this processor, this wasn’t a factor. The bottom of the netbook produced fairly minimal heat! Also since they require less power it allows much longer battery to be had with the netbook. Much more on this later!
The L2 Cache is a type of memory that allows your computer to quickly access commonly used programs and files faster when they want to be used. The higher the cache size, the faster. The 2 main cache sizes used today are 256kb and 512kb. This netbook contains a 512kb which is good.
- 1 GB DDR2 SODIMM memory, Max Capacity 2 GB
The netbook allows your system to add an additional 1 gig of ram extra onto the existing 1 gig to help speed up your computer. The more RAM, the faster your computer runs. RAM stores files and graphics vs Cache, similar to RAM, acts as “buffer” to speed up access to RAM. Since netbooks are smaller and don’t used tons of power, 1GB if RAM is a good size to have.
You might consider upgrading to the 2GB RAM. The cost for the extra 1 gig chip runs around 45 bucks and is easy to install yourself. Just pop out a cover on the back and slide it in. You might as well get the most speed out of your system with it.
- 250GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
Huge amount of storage space to store tons of files. Standard laptops have around the same amount of hard drive space. For a netbook to have the same amount is great. I have a drive that’s 250GB and am not even close to filling it up. I’ve had mine for a good full 2 year and use it daily.
- 10 Hours Straight of Battery Life!
Battery life is where this netbook shines. This netbook contains a 6 cell battery and holds 14 Hours of battery life based on what the manufacturer says. I got no where near 14 hours . I was able to get 10-12 hours of battery life with it which is still super awesome! Literally an entire work today without having to charge it is great. With my laptop I’m always carrying my charger. This netbook I don’t need too. I can leave it at home.
One cool review that I read about the battery life was this:
“I watched 3 movies using my eternal dvd drive and still had 4.5 hrs remaining left of power!” – Which is so true.
- Super Lightweight 2.8 Pounds!
Another great feature is it’s weight. Real lightweight. These netbooks are extremely portable. 2.8 pounds to be exact. The weight of 3 standard soup cans and the length no longer than a sheet of paper just to give you a better visual and weight of it.
A quick story about my girlfriend and her new netbook:
She started attended a new college. She needed a laptop for school obviously to type up reports, notes, spreadsheets, work on homework and so on for her classes. We had found a laptop for her. Worked out pretty good at the beginning but as time went by she complained about the weight of her laptop hurting her shoulder and being to heavy as she carried it around class to class and from home to school back and forth. Also she had her purse and other books to carry. We had to find an alternative solution. We decided to get a netbook for her. It worked out perfectly. The weight of the netbook being so light and overall size of it, she was able to store the netbook in her book bag with her books also eliminating the extra carrying case for her laptop.
That’s not it. The laptop she had had terrible battery life. 2 hours max after being full charged. She eventually stopped taking it. The netbook however, having hours more of battery worked out great again.
- 92% chiclet style keyword with multi-touch pad
The term “chiclet” term refers to the gum. The keys shaped and of similar style. The cool zoom in/out touchpad for zooming in on the screen is great for small text and small graphics to be enlarged in to for easier reading. Similar to the iphone feature, using your fingers to zoom in or zoom out of a page. Regarding typing, I have big hands and was worried about typing but after getting use to it, I was able to type pretty easy with minimal mistakes. So don’t worry about typing. I can almost grip and hold a basketball with my hand so just to give you a visual of my hand size.
- 10.1 Inch Color-Shine 1024×600 WSVGA LCD Display
The screen size is 1024 x 600 and comes with a 30day flawless display guarantee – If you’re screen develops dead pixels anywhere on it, you’re covered to get it replaced free. Dead pixels are small pixel dots that burn out the screen that don’t ever go away similar to a light bulb burning out.
The glossy monitor however can reflect background reflections and lights much more than a matte screen causing much more reflection on the screen making it harder to read however this is only the case you plan to use it outside a lot or near bright windows and lights behind you. However this can be fixed with a screen cover that reduces it. It’s not as bad as one would think. A typical person uses it inside in room watching TV, bedroom or there office anyway, not outside. Dim lighting is the best anyway for any type of computer situation.
2 cool features stood out that are necessary to tell you about
Access the web within seconds when your netbooks off?
The new “Instant On” Feature with a press of a button can access a web browser in seconds even if your computer was shut off. It basically bypasses the loading of windows when turning on. It’s a great feature when you need to look up something fast online, check your email or google search something.
Quick recovery with just one key
I’ve lost so many of my recovery CD’s in the past from old computer systems. Then when you need them, you can’t find them! So you have to reorder a new one and of course causing you days or weeks of waiting time to get it. No more losing your recovery cd with this. This features has the recovery cd basically “build-in” into a hard drive. By pressing the f9 key button 3 times in a row at the start up window’s screen, it’ll enable the recovery section. Of coursed used only when your needing to restore it’s factory install files and programs. Awesome feature to have.
You won’t be disappointed with it’s power, overall strong sturdy casing and battery life.
Overall the Asus 1005PE is a very attractive and sleek to own netbook. It’s very study and solid on the touch. It just feels comfortable and strong to hold and use. Mix it’s lightweight body with great long battery life and you have the ultimate portable machine! Carrying it room to room, even taking it to work without the charger wire is also really awesome.
